What is Green Design?
Green Design is also known as Eco Design, Design for the
Environment, and Sustainability. This is the art of designing the
built environment to comply with the principles of economic, social,
and ecological sustainability. Green Design is now becoming a
growing trend in Interior Design, Landscape Design, Architecture,
and Urban Planning.
The purpose of Green Design is
to produce places, services, and products in a way that will reduce
the use of non-renewable resources.
Green Design is considered a means of doing that
while maintaining the quality of life by using clever design to
substitute less harmful products and processes for conventional
ones.
Green Design is now being implemented in all
design aspects of residential and commercial properties because of
damage being done to our eco system which is out pacing the
replenishment of our environmental and energy resources.
What goes into Green Design?
Buzz words
such as low impact, recycled, non toxic, energy efficient,
ergonomic, rapidly renewable, locally produced, are all part of the
many and varied aspects of environmentally conscious design.
What is LEED?
LEED is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
How do you become LEED Certified?
Different LEED versions have varied scoring systems based on a set
of required "prerequisites" and a variety of "credits" in the six
major categories listed above. In LEED for new construction and
major renovations for commercial buildings there are 69 possible
points and buildings can qualify for four levels of certification.
LEED certification is obtained after submitting an application
documenting compliance with the requirements of the rating system as
well as paying registration and certification fees. Certification is
granted solely by the U S Green Building Council responsible for
issuing the LEED system used on the project
What are the benefits of LEED?
LEED and Green Design buildings have shown great benefits which are
a direct result of implementing Green Design. Green Design buildings
use key resources more efficiently when compared to conventional
buildings which are simply built to code. LEED creates healthier
work and living environments, contributes to higher productivity and
improved employee health and comfort.
